Dawlish lies on the south coast of Devon, on a small river called Dawlish Water, or The Brook. In ancient times, Dawlish had a salt-making industry, which ceased after the Romans left. Dawlish has a mixture of Regency and Victorian buildings. Brunel's Atmospheric Railway was pioneered here, but was dogged by maintenance problems and was replaced by conventional trains in 1848. The railway line runs right on the coastline, and consequently is battered by the sea and wind.
